CN Blue becomes the first foreign singer to be invited to Countdown Japan

CN Blue’s agency announced on November 18 that CN Blue was invited to a renowned Japanese music festival, Countdown Japan. The festival is from Dec. 28 to 31 at the International Exhibition Hall, Makuhari Messe.

As a prestigious year-end Japanese rock festival, Countdown Japan features Japan’s most popular music bands. This year, besides CN Blue, about 100 groups are expected to be invited such as ONE OK ROCK, Orange range and Dragon Ash.

The festival has stuck to the principle that it would only include Japan’s music bands. That’s why the decision to invite CN Blue for this year’s event attracted much attention as an unprecedented case.

CN Blue’s members expressed their thoughts on the invitation: “We’re very honored to be part of the festival, as the first foreign band, that has been open only to Japanese bands. We will try not to let down all of you by displaying a fantastic performance on stage of Countdown Japan.”

We set the theme as “Dream & Hope” and we put our thoughts and passions into our new single.
CNBLUE is the talked-about band that has made long-awaited Japan major debuted, their appearance in our magazine!
CNBLUE is a talented rock band from Korea. Their first album “First Step” that was released in March 2011 sold 100,000 copies in Korea. They are the “attention-getting” band right now!
We approached YongHwa, JongHyun, MinHyuk and JungShin, their thoughts put into their Japan major debut single “In My Head” and also those 4 members’ characters!










JongHyun: “Having major debut made me realised to treasure our original intention.”


-Congratulations for your major debut! What are you feeling now?
JungShin: “Although I felt a bit lonely at the last indie live concert, I feel even more excited as it’s a brand new departure from now on.”
MinHyuk: “So, I feel I have to do my best more.”
YongHwa: “When I saw our ad trailer in town, I was so surprised!”
JungShin: “Wow, there we are!”
JongHyun: “It’s running! (laugh)”
JungShin: “I was so pleased.”


-Again, you speak Japanese so well!
JongHyun: “Oh no, it’s not good enough yet.”
YongHwa: “If I don’t understand some Japanese today, I may have to rely on our interpreter, but we would like to talk with our own words. So, please forgive us if you have anything difficult to hear.”


-Oh no, there’s nothing to forgive, your Japanese are very good! (laugh)
All: “We’ll do our best!!”

-I think “In My Head” is completed as the number that has very strong intention. Please tell us what the main point is.
YongHwa: “This number is the up-tempo tune with rock ‘n’ roll tasted and full of groove.”

-I can feel more grooves in CNBLUE songs rather than other bands. But it specially stands out in this major debut single.
YongHwa: “I can say that I always take that as the important thing when I compose.”
MinHyuk: “Also as a drummer, the rhythm is very powerful and pleasant.”


-It’s exquisitely mixed with the swell of deep bass sound and the melody of high-pitched tone. That brings about the comfortable note to the listeners.
YongHwa: “Thank you very much. In fact, I composed this song (In My Head) when we were promoting “I’m A Loner” in Korea. It only took 3 minutes.”

-What? Was it that short time?
YongHwa: “Oh, Yes.”
JongHyun: “We have many songs (being composed) like that.”

-Wow, it’s amazing!
YongHwa: “I have a policy that good songs can be composed in a short time.”
JongHyun: “Of course they can’t be completed in 3 minutes. (laugh)”
YongHwa: “The rough melodic lines are created at first, and then we all add the arrangements.”


-For that situation, we say ‘Oritekita’ (the gods comes down) in Japan.
YongHwa: “Ah~, that’s what it is.”
JongHyun: “At that moment, I feel so sure, or I get a hunch that it will be a good song.”
MinHyuk: “They always let us listen right away when they composed. As soon as I listened to this song, I said to YongHwa ‘this is cool!’.”
JongHyun: “It’s strange for me to say myself, the songs I composed are all great and so adorable. (laugh)”
YongHwa: “We are living together, we compose or write songs in our own rooms. As soon as we finished, we let other members t listen.”
JongHyun: “We are the very first judges. (laugh)”
YongHwa: “I always look forward to their feedback, like what their responses will be.”
JongHyun: “If they say ‘It’s very good!’, ‘OK!’ (holds up his fists in triumph) Then I can carry on further. But they say ‘It’s so so~’, I say ‘Ah~, what a pity.’…”


-At that time, would it be turned down?
YongHwa: “Yes. The intuition is important.”
JongHyun: “The songs that everyone say ‘It’s good’, they are also good songs for other people.”

-But the members never say ‘It’s bad’, right?
MinHyuk: “It’s not a bad. But we can’t really say ‘It’s good’ (bitter smile)”

-So that you say ‘It’s so, so.’…
JungShin: We all understand song-writing is very hard work, we can’t really say ‘It’s not good.” too hastily.”

-That’s so kind, very considerate.
MinHyuk: “I think it’s very rude to say things like that to someone who has worked so hard. I think we should be grateful for being able to write songs.”
JongHyun: “But, I can kind of guess when I see everyone’s expressions. (laugh) Ah~, this is good, or this is not good.”





-The members are the toughest judges, right? So, all the members reached a consensus that “In My Head” is a good song, then!
YongHwa: “(with full smile in his face) Yes!”
JungShin: “I liked it when I listened to it for the first time. I was so happy vicariously when “In My Head” was chosen to be our Japan major debut single.”
YongHwa: “Thank you very much.”

-We can really feel your uncompromising stance for each of your song, your persistence for your own musicality, and also your love for the music from the all of the three numbers (in “In My Head”).
JongHyun: “This time, the single is to introduce ourselves to Japanese people, so we put in the album how we feel now, the theme of ‘Dream and Hope’ and our passions in this single.”
YongHwa: “Also, the second number “Mr.KIA (Know It All)” has meaning of being conceited or boastful. Even though I wrote it to satirise those people, at the same time, I meant it to warn ourselves not to forget our original intentions.”
JongHyun: “Now having made the major debut in Japan, we promised again to ourselves not to forget our original intentions. But we still haven’t reached the stage that we can talk about our original intentions yet.”

-Oh, no. You have already filled Yokohama Arena as an indie, your ZEPP Tour and Yoyogi live concerts are already sold out…
JungShin: “No, no. We are far from it.”

-The humble gesture like that…You always value your fans more than anything.
YongHwa: “As we started off from street live performances, we really appreciate our fans presence and also we always thank them a lot.”



YongHwa: “I’ve always liked to draw something or create something since I was small. I started composing when I was in junior high school.”

-Well, as for the third track “Rain of Blessing” is ballad and JongHyun composed it.
YongHwa: “I like songs that have strong groove tunes, but JongHyun likes J-POP and the ballads.”
JongHyun: “As the first and second tracks have strong beat tunes, so I thought that we need to have something relaxing to listen to as the last one. I was inspired when I saw the film of “Sekai no Chushin de, Ai wo Sakebu (Crying Out Love, In The Centre of the World)” and I used this single to resemble as a drama or a film. I was well aware of “Kisho Tenketsu (起承転結 / Introduction, Development, Turn and Conclusion)”, so I composed that (kisho tenketsu) to float towards ending.”

-Also the music video is simple but it’s made like the most of the band style.
YongHwa: “We wanted it to be a rock ‘n’ roll style. We thought the drama style would be so unlike us.”
JongHyun: “There’s a scene that we play in the storm, it was hard as a lot of things were flying toward us.”
MinHyuk: “A carrying case flew towards us.”
YongHwa: “A beer bottle, too.”
JongHyun: “I was frightened (laugh)”

-You showed that you use many different aspects this time. I’m looking forward to your activities in Japan a lot from now on. Do you have any dreams or goals now?
MinHyuk: “I would like for us to be well recognised in Japan and those who listen to our music would say ‘Oh, that’s CNBLUE’s song!’”
JungShin: “I would like us to be a band that everyone likes and long for.”
JongHyun: “I would like to perform at Fuji Rock Festival and play with my favourite band BUMP OF CHICKEN.”
YongHwa: “I would like to perform at Summer Sonic as well and would like to hold a secret live concert in Shinjuku again.”

-There were so many people at that time and it went into uproar around Shinjuku Station.
YongHwa: “So, I’ll put on a mask for disguise and perform quietly next time. (laugh)”
JungShin: “The street live performance is our start point. I realised that the street live performance is such a fun thing to do and would like to value it from now on.”
JongHyun: “Exactly, that’s what ‘not to forget our original intention’ is all about, like we said earlier.”


-So all are linked now. Well, tell us what your dreams were when you were small.
JongHyun: “A Gold medallist. In fact, I was a Judo player until I was at high school.”

-Really? You’re so skinny.
JongHyun: “Yes. Everyone says they can’t believe it, said that I’m lying. (laugh)”
All: “Unbelievable! (laugh)”

-Indeed. It’s not a lie, is it?
JongHyun: “I was a gold medallist in Busan. But I lost at the national tournament and it was mortifying. I hate to lose, so I gave up right away. I had liked Karaoke and then I started playing music.”
MinHyuk: “I was influenced by my father and my dream was to be a baseball player. But I gave it up when I was at junior high school and braced myself up for studying at the beginning.”

- What made you turn on to the music?
MinHyuk: “I was learning flute and piano when I was small. But I was attracted by drums when I entered high school and the music turned on me again, and I spontaneously started playing drums.”
JungShin: “My dreams were to be a photographer and a model when I was small. One of my relatives was a photographer. But I aspire to becoming a bassist when I was at junior high school and I got to know MR. BIG and was attracted by its bassist and became to like them.”

-You made your dream come true as a model.
JungShin: “Oh, yes. (a sheepish grin)”

-The next is the debut as a photographer.
JungShin: “I would like to take photos if CNBLUE and someday I would like to do something with those photos.”
JongHyun: “JungShin is good at posing but I can’t say he’s good at photographing. (laugh) So, please wait to become a photographer.”
JungShin: “I’ll try to do my best! (laugh)”
YongHwa: “My mother took me to piano and clarinet lessons since I was 6 years old. I’ve always liked to draw something or create something since I was small. I started composing when I was in junior high school.”
JongHyun: “Ah~, I know that. It’s ‘EASY LOVE’! A junior high school student wrote ‘EASY LOVE’.”
All: “(laugh)”

-Do you still have that song?
YongHwa: “It’s in my PC at my home in Busan!”

-So, you will unveil that song sometime?
YongHwa: “No… So embarrassing. (laugh) But, if I get a chance…”
JongHyun: “We will judge first!”
MinHyuk: “Please let us listen to it, YongHwa!”
JungShin: “We’ll be very strict. (laugh)”
YongHwa: “Ah, scary. (laugh) I think they must say, ‘So so’. (laugh)


-Anyway, if it passes your judgement, it may possible to be your second single then?
YongHwa: “I hope so. Next time I go home, I may listen to it again. (laugh)”

First Episode Shooting in Jeju-do

While we were talking about Shinwoo’s one sided love for Minam in ‘You Are Beautiful’, I asked him, “This time it is a happy ending for you!” He replied in smile, “I’m also curious”. In commemoration of broadcast in Japan, he explained how Heartstrings has been appealing to him.



Question: It has been two years after ‘You Are Beautiful’, now you’re acting in a new drama, besides, it is the first time for you to be the main lead. How do you feel now?

Yong Hwa: First of all, I’m so happy to act with Shin Hye again. It really is fun to film.

Question: How can you define Lee Shin whom you are acting as?

Yong Hwa: Lee shin is a person who likes music and family. He cares only what he likes and seldom gives any interest to anythingelse. He is cool.

Question: What kind of personality and characteristics does Kyu Won has?

Shin Hye: She is a bright, cute and girl. One hand she is simple, the other hand she is a lovely girl who acts ahead for the sake of friends.

Question: Are there any similarities between you and Kyu Won?

Shi Hye: Being positive, energetic and cheerful is the similarity between us, therefore, being acting is fun. Being childlike is something in common between me and Kyu Won as well.

Question: What are the similarities between Yonghwa and Lee Shin?

Yong Hwa: We both are in a band and love instrument and music. (smile) But Lee Shin’s situation and personality is not similar to mine. I’m interested in various things while Lee Shin doesn’t.

Question: What kind of advice and directing did you receive from director Pyo?

Yong Hwa: Whoever he meets such as his friends, Kyu Won, his family or those whom he likes he expresses different feeling in his face. So director Pyo advised me to act differently to express his feeling.


Question: What have you prepared to act the role of Kyu won? Have you ever suggested any idea?

Shin Hye: Kyu Won is not only cute but also free and easy. She is also feminine and childlike. I’m trying to show various sides of Kyu Won.

Question: Shooting hasn’t begun today. What was your favourite shot you have done so far?

Shin Hye: As she promises to play Gayageum for musical battle with Lee Shin and his guitar, she regrets about the promise of the battle walking down the campus of university and bumps into Professor Suk Hyun. The scene is when the professor says in joke, “Is your head made out of stone?” and he really like her cuteness. Another scene is when she has musical battle with Lee Shin. It is such a tense situation.

Question: What was the most difficult scene so far?

Yong Hwa: Riding a bicycle. I had to ride up the hills by bicycle. (Laugh)

Question: What would you relay to message to viewers in this drama?

Shin Hye: In this drama every character is pursuing dream and love and lives for its life. Every moment of life for each character is precious so I hope viewers would feel the same way.

Question: What do you think?

Yong Hwa: The story is about twenties ‘fresh love story. In the other hand, regardless of ages, it’s about everbody’s experiences in “youth romance” and the drama portrays well about it.

CNBLUE Jung Yong Hwa’s “Heartstrings” will be airing soon in Japan and to commemorate its Japanese premiere,an interview with Jung YongHwa has taken place. Heartstrings’ Japanese title is ‘おれのコトスキでしょ’ and will be airing on Nov 24 for the first time.

He said “Before starring the drama (YAB), I was not noticed or recognized walking in the airport alone. But nowadays whenever I visit Japan, all the flight attendees recognized me which made me surprised. (laugh) In a sense, it was a good opportunity to expand the fandom for me to star in YAB and I really appreciate it.”

As a musician, an actor and a star that will lead next generation, his activities will be more noticeable.
To cater to the people’s expectation towards him, he will act to the best of his ability by himself.

Shi Hye: Being positive, energetic and cheerful is the similarity between us, therefore, being acting is fun. Being childlike is something in common between me and Kyu Won as well.

Question: What are the similarities between Yonghwa and Lee Shin?
Yong Hwa: We both are in a band and love instrument and music. (smile) But Lee Shin’s situation and personality is not similar to mine. I’m interested in various things while Lee Shin doesn’t.

Question: What kind of advice and directing did you receive from director Pyo?
Yong Hwa: Whoever he meets such as his friends, Kyu Won, his family or those whom he likes he expresses different feeling in his face. So director Pyo advised me to act differently to express his feeling.

Question: What have you prepared to act the role of Kyu won? Have you ever suggested any idea?
Shin Hye: Kyu Won is not only cute but also free and easy. She is also feminine and childlike. I’m trying to show various sides of Kyu Won.

Question: Shooting hasn’t begun today. What was your favourite shot you have done so far?
Shin Hye: As she promises to play Gayageum for musical battle with Lee Shin and his guitar, she regrets about the promise of the battle walking down the campus of university and bumps into Professor Suk Hyun. The scene is when the professor says in joke, “Is your head made out of stone?” and he really like her cuteness. Another scene is when she has musical battle with Lee Shin. It is such a tense situation.

Question: What was the most difficult scene so far?
Yong Hwa: Riding a bicycle. I had to ride up the hills by bicycle. (Laugh)
Question: What would you relay to message to viewers in this drama?
Shin Hye: In this drama every character is pursuing dream and love and lives for its life. Every moment of life for each character is precious so I hope viewers would feel the same way.

Question: What do you think?
Yong Hwa: The story is about twenties ‘fresh love story. In the other hand, regardless of ages, it’s about everbody’s experiences in “youth romance” and the drama portrays well about it.
